The World in Two Years

By: Rick Barton, ICISF CEO

In March of 2020 the world seemed to nearly shut down at a level we could never predict. At the ICISF, we watched closely to monitor the direction of the crisis and then developed a continually evolving plan to ensure that CISM and ICISF services would remain available. We put ourselves in a position to be lucky, if there is anything akin to good fortune amid a pandemic.

It is important to look at the world around us, do our best to identify trends and then forecast the near future. There are some certainties, and many other possibilities. Care to make a guess?

  1. Remote working is here to stay. Perhaps not to the degree of the height of COVID terror, but certainly far exceeding pre-2020 levels.
  2. Individual concern about public health will remain high for the foreseeable future. People will focus on the uncertainty of what is going to happen next until “next” arrives. Then they will worry about what comes next.
  3. Medical workers remain under significant stress and will for years to come. This existed long before the pandemic. For example, the number of medical care personnel who are assaulted by patients is staggering and the incidents are frightening.
  4. The pressure on public education elevated during COVID and won’t likely relax for a long time. The learning loss caused by pandemic-related adjustments does not automatically have a happen ending.
  5. The world economy remains largely uncertain. Fuel price increases seemed inevitable and often foreshadow an economic recession. When business costs go up, we can imagine what happens next.
  6. Violent criminal activity will continue to increase until elected leaders are willing to be bold enough to implement broad multi-dimensional programs to change the momentum. People will continue to hurt other people.
  7. Mental health care will rise as a routine human need akin to regular dental treatment.
  8. Social media will become an even greater form of entertainment and communication and will become the primary news source for a large segment of the world population.
  9. A larger number of college students will earn degrees without ever setting a foot inside a classroom or on a university campus.
  10. Automobiles will drive themselves if a sober person is in the vehicle.
  11. People will continue to demand fair and equal treatment, but those standards will remain unmet.
  12. There will be a significant environmental disaster affecting at least one continent. This will not be a weather disaster; those will continue to occur. An environmental disaster is much greater in scope.

The single prediction that remains without any doubt is that the future is going to arrive, and after that arrival the future still lies ahead. There is always tomorrow. The uncertainty is about our degree of preparation.
