We view the “International” part of our name as a meaningful component of our strategic emphasis but also one that is not easily accomplished. That perspective offers a starting point while also setting the tone for action. We know that the ICISF model of work offers value to cultures around the world. Making the logistics effective internationally is an area of our work that we value and are making some strong progress.
Geographic distance, time zone differences and language and terminology variances all present significant obstacles. For example, live virtual presentations will create a time zone challenge. It may be live on the east coast of the United States at 9:00 am but will run at 9:00 pm elsewhere in the world. Over many years, the shipping of certificates and course manuals created huge costs. Even if we translate the materials into various languages, some of the specific CISM jargon does not effectively translate.
Gradual progress has occurred over time resulting in meaningful improvement. Digital materials, including eBooks, are becoming more readily available, thus eliminating shipping costs. We have made some progress with translations but much more needs to occur. We continue to introduce more online courses, including the two most popular core courses, Assisting Individuals in Crisis and Group Crisis intervention. Online courses do not suffer from any time zone challenges. Communication via email and social media also works well anywhere that internet access is available.
There is meaningful work in Europe and Australia to advance the use of the ICISF model throughout those continents. ICISF Canada is our close partner and is doing important work to ensure fidelity to the model and to help instructors overcome logistical issues. You will see articles and updates about these three areas in LifeNet.
Some of these advances are the result of improved technology. Providing certificates as a digital product works well across continents. We recognize the power of having a printed certificate that documents achievement. We expect that both values can be satisfied because a digital certificate can be printed locally.
These are only examples of international progress. The most important element of this progress is that the ICISF is committed to our international role. We want to overcome obstacles and advance our work as a global leader in the CISM movement. As with most endeavors, a positive attitude and a willing spirit creates success. The second key element is having good partners such as those mentioned above in this article. Side by side, we will achieve great things.
