Critical Incidents in Places of Worship – Providing Effective Crisis Support

Course Description:

The faith based communities have long been responders to disaster and emergencies, providing needed care to those impacted. Recent events both in the US and internationally highlight the need for crisis services for those very faith based communities when events impact their staff and volunteers. This workshop will address providing crisis services for places of worship, with an emphasis on caring for the staff, spiritual leadership, and worshipers as potential groups needing services.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify 5 factors that enhance crisis support for places of worship
  • List 5 common psychological reactions to critical incidents occurring in places of worship
  • State 10 key recommendations for providing support in faith based venues
  • Identify 3 training topics to prepare crisis teams to provide support in faith based venues
  • List 3 pre-crisis interventions that may enhance crisis support services in faith based venues
  • Discuss 5 domains of assessment of crisis needs in places of worship following a critical incident
  • Identify 3 ways CISM interventions may be used with specific target groups in places of worship
  • State 5 key consultation issues for working with places of worship before, during, and after a crisis event
  • Identify the prevalence of violence in places of worship
  • List 5 lessons learned from case studies of recent episodes of violence in places of worship


Certificates and Continuing Education:

General Contact Hours: 

One-Day Course; 7 Contact Hours: 0.7 General CEUs from University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Dept. of Emergency Health Services Professional and Continuing Education (PACE). Based on a formula of 1 Continuing Education Unit for every 10 contact/classroom hours.

ICISF Certificate of Completion:

After the completion of this ICISF course, with verified full attendance, participants are eligible to receive an electronic ICISF Certificate of Completion including General Continuing Education Units. Participants are required to complete a course evaluation prior to receiving this Certificate of Completion.

Completion of ICISF courses and receipt of an ICISF Certificate of Completion does not attest to competence in the field, nor does it provide certification in the field of CISM. 

** Please check with your state licensing board prior to registration to see if they will accept the Certificate of Completion as a means for continuing education.
